Environmental and climate change is one of the most severe challenges facing humankind today and requires new skills from decision-makers and those that advise them. All over the world the demand for environmental experts with a strong background in social sciences, in particular policy and planning is growing steadily as the ability to provide accurate political analysis and professional skills in developing integrated plans and long-term-oriented strategies becomes increasingly valuable. Experts and decision-makers who seek to create innovative solutions to today's complex problems need the knowledge and skills of not just one discipline but several. Successful solutions arise from careful policy analysis, impact assessment and planning capabilities. Our Master's Program Environmental Policy and Planning responds to these challenges by combining the fields of political science and planning.

Our students will benefit from an internationally vibrant networking research and higher education communities at both the Environmental Policy Research Centre at the Freie Universit?t Berlin and the Environmental Assessment & Planning Research Group at the Technische Universit?t Berlin.

The Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU) is one of the premier European institutions offering social science PhDs related to environmental and sustainable energy issues. Numerous activities are organized for the PhD students. A bi-weekly colloquium provides an opportunity for PhD candidates to discuss research design and methodology questions, engage in theoretical debates, and present and critique PhD research. An annual Salzburg Conference is organized related to energy and the environment and PhD students are invited to present their work there to a group of experts in the field. A wide array of courses related to energy and the environment, comparative and international politics, social movements, and methodology are available to PhD students.
